What are they for?

The application range of diamond wire saws in the stone working industry has increased more and more.

After the beginning of wire sawing in the quarries of Carrara, diamond wire sawing technology was steadily improved.

The development of wire saws with plastic and rubber coating made the wire saw interesting for the granite industry, too.

Today, wire saws are available for three major applications:

1. quarries;
2. stationary block sawing;
3. contour wire saw;
4. application on multiwire machine.

 Application in quarries

The benefits of the wire saw versus blasting, flame cutting or perforation drilling are well known today.
There are two diamond wire saw systems for extracting raw blocks from quarries:

1. diamond wire saw with steel springs;
2. diamond wire saw with plastic coating.
   

Soft stones such as marble, limestone or travertine are sawn with spring-type wire saws, fitted with electroplated or sintered diamond beads.

Hard stones such as granite, gabbro, etc., are a considerably tougher application for diamond wire saws. The design used here features plastic coating between the diamond beads.

For very tough applications, the spacing between the diamond beads can also be fixed by means of springs.

 Application on stationary block saws

Today's block sawing machines give many possibilities for further machining of raw blocks:

1. block trimming;
2. cut-off of outer crust of block;
3. slab and billet production with one or more wires on shafts.
   

The design of the wire saws used here is analogous to that described in the previous section.

 Application on contour wire saw

This uses the 8.5mm "thin" WINTERSTONE contour wire saw with sintered beads and plastic coating.

This wire sawing technology permits economic production of memorial stones with curved head shapes, and any other type of cut into the stone.

Application on multiwire machine

Thanks to the new generations of wire machines, the diamond wire has also become very succesful at cutting marble and granite slabs.
